Pneumonia is an infection that inflames the air sacs of the lungs, causing cough, fever, breathlessness and chest pain. It ranges from mild to serious; bacterial pneumonia is treated with antibiotics, and high-risk groups may need hospital care.
The germs that cause it can spread between people, though not everyone exposed develops pneumonia. Good hygiene and vaccination lower the risk.
