Low back pain

Low back pain is very common and usually not serious, often from muscle strain or posture. Most cases improve within weeks with staying active, gentle movement and simple pain relief; certain 'red flag' symptoms need prompt review.

Symptoms

  • Aching or stiffness in the lower back
  • Pain that eases with movement or position changes
  • Sometimes pain spreading to the buttock or leg

When to see a doctor

  • Pain after a significant injury
  • Numbness in the groin, or loss of bladder/bowel control (urgent)
  • Leg weakness, fever, or unexplained weight loss

FAQs

Should I rest in bed for back pain?

Generally no. Short rest is fine, but staying gently active helps recovery. Prolonged bed rest tends to make back pain worse.
