High cholesterol means too much fatty lipid (especially LDL) in the blood, which can build up in arteries and raise the risk of heart attack and stroke. It usually causes no symptoms and is found on a blood test, then managed with diet, activity and sometimes statin medicine.
Many adults check every few years, and more often if you have risk factors or take cholesterol medicine — your doctor will advise an interval.
