Heart attack (warning signs)

A heart attack happens when blood flow to part of the heart is blocked. Warning signs include central chest pain or pressure that may spread to the arm, jaw or back, with sweating, breathlessness or nausea. It is a medical emergency — call emergency services immediately.

Symptoms

• Chest pain, pressure or tightness
• Pain spreading to arm, jaw, neck or back
• Shortness of breath
• Cold sweat
• Nausea or light-headedness

When to see a doctor

• Call emergency services immediately for chest pain with sweating, breathlessness or pain spreading to the arm/jaw
• Do not drive yourself if you suspect a heart attack
